Baked Sweet Onions

4 lb Large sweet onions
1/4 c Butter or margarine; melted
1 10 3/4 ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup; undiluted
1 c Half-and-half
1/4 ts Salt
1/4 ts Pepper
1 c Shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
1 Thick slices French bread
3 tb Butter or margarine; melted


Slice onions; cut each slice in half. Saute onion in 1/4 cup butter in a Dutch oven until crisp-tender; spoon into a lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Set aside. Combine soup, half-and-half, salt, and pepper; pour mixture over onion. Sprinkle cheese evenly over sauce; arrange bread slices on top, and brush with 3 tablespoons melted butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until golden brown.
